I have just finished a project with W Hotels and The Elton John Aids Foundation.

I worked with Patrick Cox, Ron Arad, Natasha Law, Alice Temperley and Paloma Faith to produce bikes that guests at the Leciester Square W Hotel could use as well as enjoy as artworks. In October they will then be auctioned by EJAF.

In addition I was asked to produce a bike for W Hotels in New York and not make it too Statue of Liberty and Yellow Cab kitsh. I used the Manhattan Grid as a starting point.

The other starting point for the 6 bikes I produced was the iconic modern classic 14 Bike Co. ESB frame and forks designed by Edward James.

This is one of my favourite books of all time. Ever. Amazing photographs of bikes since people started making them up to the present day.

This little beauty is on page 310:

Derbi 50 Grand Prix- 49cc-1970-Made in Spain.

The name Derbi is an acknowledgement of the company history and is an acronym for Derivados de Bicicletas - Derivatives of Bicycles because they started out making push bikes. In the 50s they decided to manufacture bicycles with engines concentrating on a range of lighter mopeds and motorcycles.

The Derbi won races against the Suzuki and Kreidler machines with its highly tuned single cylinder, 2 stoke engine assembled with watchmakers precision.

This is a 2011 concept bike from the ever progressive Spanish company. It looks a bit techy but I imagine it would be great fun.

This is the Yamaha 80cc powered Moto-Bike MK 1 that I showed at the Bicycle Film Festival art show in 2010. I'm going to use a Honda CRF50 for MK 2. Its not going to be for cross-country or going down hills and the only racing will be up Brick Lane After Dark... I want it to have front/back suspension and I'm looking forward to experimenting with formed tubing for the frame.

UK based artist Benedict Radcliffe unveiled his most recent collaboration with car manufacturer Land Rover on Tuesday, a wireframe art installation of the Range Rover Evoque. The exclusive Land Rover event was held at this year's Geneva motor show as a part of their 'pulse of the city' campaign for whom radcliffe created a series of wireframe installations that have been on display all over the world.

Made entirely from steel, bent and formed, welded together, filed down, powder coated and then painted in a myriad of bright colors, radcliffe's life size installation reflects his passion for machinery and handwork. the installation includes 3d wheels with both front and back seats suspended in left, right and top cross sections of the car.

For Land Rover, the frame was built to reveal many of the interior and exterior features that allow customers to personalize their vehicles. however the frame also allows for viewers to reinterpret their relationship to a vehicle and the space both contained inside and around the object.

Radcliffe has a studio in london where he pursues both personal projects and exhibitions as well as collaborating with international companies. He recently finished a circular soccer pitch for Continental.

We had two or three of the Honda Express mopeds. They were a

great bike for us to play around with in the garden when

we were young. At 10 /11 years old I'd seen a few mini motorbikes

like the Italjet and Honda below and wanted one BAD. I wasn't ever going

to get one. They were £150/£200 and my father would pick up an old Express or Cub 90 for £20.

I remember excitedly discussing with him how we could make it less like a

Frank Spencer moped and more like a Motocrosser... The tank

should be moved to the front. Handlebars much lower and different seat.

We never got round to it. These memories stirred when making the

Moto-Bike a few months ago.

People have been tinkering with bikes and engines for a long time:

Félix Millet showed a 5 cylinder rotary engine built into a bicycle wheel at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. Millet had patented the engine in 1888, so must be considered the pioneer of the internal combustion rotary engine. A machine powered by his engine took part in the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris race of 1895 and the system was put into production by Darracq in 1900.

Soichiro Honda adapted WWII suplus engines, originally designed to power army transmitters, for use on comon bicycles. The above image represents the crude but important beginning of the Honda legacy. Honda's Model A of 1947, the first production engine of Honda design, also intended for fitting to commercially available bicycles.

Monday 7th- We arrived at Stade de France 2pm. Very pleased with the Isuzu. It has a semi-agricultural/tractor-like diesel engine which keeps on pulling. Super tough. I also like that it is understated and low key. And ever so slightly chavey.

This went together really easily. I got given the frame by a friend and used parts and stickers I've had knocking around. Unintentionally it has become a bit of a Klunker bike. It does look a bit wierd and 'klunky' but its good fun.

Klunker Bikes were proto mountain bikes and started in Marin Country, Northern California in the early 70s. Check the Excelsiors- a Klunker Crew in 1976:

I remember seeing these scooters in Thailand 2003 and being facinated by them. An evolved, over customised, skinny wheeled, with or without plastics child of the Honda C90.

Wikipedia:

An underbone is a small motorcycle built on a frame consisting mostly of one large diameter tubular component. The stylistic difference between a motorcycle and an underbone is considerable and they are sometimes known as "step-throughs" or even marketed as scooters in the West.

The fuel tank position and the open-frame design, along with the splash guards often fitted, give the underbone an appearance similar to ascooter, however the wheels, engine position, and power transmission are based on the design of conventional motorcycles.

Underbones are popular worldwide, but in East Asian and South East Asian countries in particular they dominate the low cost market segment with their scooter-like ease of use, their appeal to both sexes, and their motorcycle-like dependable handling properties.

I HAD to put Koenig styled wheel arches on the Lamborghini. Firstly for structural reasons so the work wouldn't sag under its own weight and secondly and more importantly, wheel arches add dynamism to the overall look of the car.

A Yamaha PW80 2-stroke engine mounted in bespoke custom frame. I worked with Edward James on this nice little project first exhibited at the Bicycle Film Festival Art Show, London, 2010. After lots of interest I'm developing this idea further with Honda Motoden. Watch this space for a new road legal version.

Over forty metres of shop hoarding. The machine holds nine cans. I did three runs, bottom, middle and top and sprayed twenty seven lines. The whole job took just under 10 minutes. Thanks to Louis Gibson.

Bicycle Film Festival 'JOYRIDE' art exhibition- London

"Radcliffe is both engineer and artist. His work focuses on the beauty of hand making something, crafting it from scratch, and the resulting fetishisation of this practice.

His work looks at transport and engineering in contemporary culture, and gently comments on current trends and obsessions.

For this show, Radcliffe has constructed a 2:1 bike frame: A perfectly finished hand built track frame stands clamped to stand with a concrete base. Made from scaffolding tubes, gas pipes and two steel railway bolts, this beautifully made and car body fillered plus size model plays on the viewers’ expectations of, and reactions to, the impossible scale of the object.

The frame has been covered with layers of different coloured paint and then sanded and re-sanded exposing and creating an effect reminiscent of science, radioactive waste and cinematic science fiction.

Radcliffe’s second piece is a bike with a motor. Again, the frame is hand built and bespoke to allow for the PW Yamaha 80cc donor engine.

With help from Edward James, the steel frame has been handcrafted and exquisitely engineered, whilst also being made physically tough enough to accommodate a mini motorbike engine.

With wheels and tyres from a downhill mountain bike added, the result is a low slung cruiser, with a style similar to early American board track racers.

Radcliffe’s pieces are experiments. His work explores the area where play meets skilled engineer/maker, and hobby becomes obsession. His boyish inquisitiveness paired with a knowledge of 1920s motor/ bike collaborations drove him to make an object - an immaculately constructed machine - that he could ‘play’ with.

This frivolity is then combined with a strong understanding of materials, engineering and the history of transport. And the result is a practice that marries craftsman and high design with childlike fantasist and garden shed hobbyist."

I fell off my bike just as I was about to start the project and had my right hand in plaster. I asked Edward James (AKA Super Ted), master craftsman, engineer and frame builder to help out. We started off getting a frame set at CEEWAYS. They sell Columbus and Reynolds tubing, dropouts, lugs, fork crowns and everything else you could possibly want to build a frame.

I hired a van and drove to a couple of fantastic auto jumbles at the weekend. I wanted to pick up a good little engine for a new project. It was motorbike heaven.

I bought stickers, posters and postcards aswell as a little Yamaha that runs sweet as. I'm going to use the engine for next project- MOTO-BIKE, I'm going to try and fit the engine into a mountain bike.

I was asked by Red Bull to be part of the Canvas Cooler Project- fifteen or so artists customise a Red Bull fridge. I made a structure enclosing the fridge and then a steel 'aeriel'. Big up Oscar Reutersvard, Roger Penrose and Fergus Palace Purcell.

BMW SKULL BONNET - APRIL 2010

Following my other BMW bonnets, I did the bodywork myself: the eyes had to be cut out and filled and the mouth had to be skimmed over. I then gave the bonnet to a garage I have used before to spray it fluro orange. A disaster- the bodyfiller bled through. They charged me too. I had to take it back down to the bare metal and start again. I was livid but Louis sorted it out. It was a good exercise in if you want something done properly... The bonnet turned out OK after I compounded it but there was a couple of areas where the filler still bled through. Spraying is hard. The skull was hand painted on.
